Adirondack Film is a proud supporter of the Summer Series screenings at the Strand Theater in Schroon Lake, NY. The Strand offers local film aficionados great walks down cinematic memory lanes with screenings of beloved short films and feature-length pictures. Adding a fun extra ingredient to this smorgasbord of cinematic delights are special guest commentators from the entertainment industry to provide expert insight before and after the scheduled screenings.

The first of the Summer Series screenings were Laurel and Hardy restored silent shorts, which were screened on July 8, 2024 at 8PM. Fans of classic comedy duo Laurel and Hardy were treated to a set of silent shorts which were restored in high-definition film quality. The improved restoration allowed for greater viewing enhancement, allowing for audiences to enjoy the shorts more without the hassle of the aged, outdated film quality.

Providing an added musical touch is renowned pianist Ben Model. An accomplished accompanist, Model performed his own piano compositions that accompanied the Laurel and Hardy shorts via piano and theater organ. For 40 years, Model created and performed thousands of live scores for many silent films. Model is a resident film accompanist for such famous institutes as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY and the Library of Congress’ Packard Campus Theater. In addition, he performs at numerous theaters, museums, schools, and other venues around the world.

Another classic film to be screened at the Summer Series is the iconic 1973 comedy crime-thriller “The Sting” on Monday, July 29, 2024. Directed by George Roy Hill, “The Sting” stars legendary actors Paul Newman and Robert Redford, which reunites them from their previous smash outing, 1969’s “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” In their second pairing, Newman and Redford portray two Great Depression-era grifters who seek to avenge a partner’s death by pulling off the ultimate con against the vicious gangster responsible (Robert Shaw).

Providing cinematic analysis at “The Sting” screening will be noted film expert Jeremy Arnold. A notable author, film historian, and commentator, Arnold has appeared on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) as a guest programmer and host on numerous occasions. In 2023, alongside TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, Arnold programmed and guest-hosted a 20-film spotlight towards B-movies from the 1930s and 1940s. Arnold also included “The Sting” in his book, “The Essentials, Vol. 2: 52 More Must-See Movies And Why They Matter, which was published in October 2020 by Running Press and TCM.

Film lovers in the Adirondacks area and beyond are encouraged to patronage the Strand Theater in Schroon Lake and experience classic cinema as it was meant to be seen: on the big screen! Tickets for “The Sting” screening will be $15.00 at the door.
